Since January 2010, Dr Clear Hill and Partners, has had a Patient Participation Group.
The Patient Group will help the practice make improvements to services to patients and work as an intermediary and liaison between patients and practice staff.
The group is non-political and is not there for individual patients to express personal complaints but is there as a way of helping to improve communication between patients and staff by assisting for example with the practice newsletter.
It is up to individuals in how much time they wish to put into the group. No training is required to be a member of the group, but it is important that members join because they are keen on helping the surgery and the local patient population.
If you are interested in joining to help the patient participation group committee with any on-going projects and you are a patient at Dr Clear Hill and Partners then please write to the Practice Manager who will pass your details on to the PPG’s secretary.
If you would like to help the group or would like to contact the patient group then please e-mail

Over 30 BHC patients attended the presentation given by Ray Hardisty on Wednesday, 8 June 2011 at the Billericay Health Centre. Ray started his presentation as an icebreaker with a questionnaire of seven questions, the answers to which were sometimes quite surprising. Some general facts:

- This means 1.1% of the UK’s population currently suffer from dementia.
- One in 14 people over the age of 65 in the UK currently have dementia.
- One in 6 people over the age of 80 in the UK currently have dementia.
- There are more than 100 different types of dementia.
- Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia in the UK.

from 3.00 to 5.00 pm.
We are hoping to raise money for Dr. Fernie’s trip to Nepal in aid of
the charity “Kids Alive”.
She is taking 16 teenagers out to Nepal in July to help refurbish a
Hindu orphanage The money we raise will go towards the orphanage NOT
towards the youngsters’ expenses.
Dr. Fernie will be there to tell us all about it, so come and have an
enjoyable afternoon and help a good cause into the bargain. Anyone who
is willing to help on the day or make cakes beforehand please let
reception know.

From Wheelchair to Windsurfer – Stroke Awareness Talk on 16 March 2011 –
when Peter Parker, a recovered stroke victim, and Beverley
Reynolds, Assistant Regional Manager of the Stroke Association,
came and gave us an interesting and informative talk at the
Health Centre.
About forty members of staff, supporters of the Patient Participation
Group, and interested patients from the surgery attended.
Refreshments were available, as well as leaflets about Stroke
Awareness, and there was the opportunity to ask questions and
obtain more information from our speakers.
Peter told us about what happened to him in 1987 when he had a stroke
which was not diagnosed for twelve days, even though he
contacted his GP, went to A and E, and was sent to a General
Ward at Broomfield. He recovered when he was sent home, using
his own initiative, adapting the exercises physiotherapy had
given him, brain training to increase concentration, and jogging
to give physical exercise. Patients suffer tiredness, and he
still does, and often depression is another factor to be taken
into consideration. He persevered and was able to windsurf
across the Channel in 1989, windsurfing being one of his targets
when he was so ill. He has publicised and raised money for the
Stroke Association ever since.
Things have changed since then, as Beverley explained. If you have
symptoms like those covered in F A S T – Face, Arm, Speech, Time
– call 999 – strokes which are treated early give a much
better chance of recovery. She told us about the history and
activities of the Stroke Association, and left leaflets at the
Surgery. If you need more information, contact Janet Craven of
the Communication Support Service on 01268 561600 or at
